TRENTON - A group of demonstrators gathered in front of the New Jersey State House Monday in an effort to ask Congress not to repeal the Affordable Health Care Act (ACA).

Brian Kulas was one of the demonstrators. He is currently covered under the act for his diagnoses of schizophrenia and obsessive-compulsive disorder. He gets coverage through Medicare thanks to changes made by the ACA.

“I used to have to go the emergency room just to get my medications filled and it would cost almost $1,000,” he says.

He says that he fears what would happen if the ACA was repealed, as President Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress have vowed to do.

“There no doubt that I would probably end up becoming homeless where I’ve been before,” Kulas says.

Other demonstrators say that they are also concerned about what could happen if they are without health insurance. Gov. Chris Christie is now saying he doesn’t want that to happen.

“The fact is that right now the heat is on the Republicans. It’s on us,” Christie said on CNN Monday. “And I said this at a meeting of the governors yesterday. We asked for authority to change the country.”

Republican lawmakers now say that their approach would provide "universal access" to health care, without a guarantee that those currently enrolled could keep their insurance.

President Trump is expected to discuss health care plans in his joint congressional address Tuesday.
