Racing delayed at Meadowlands amid labor dispute

EAST RUTHERFORD - Harness racing at the Meadowland Racetrack won't start as scheduled after the union representing the betting-window tellers declined to vote on taking a pay cut.

Racing was scheduled to begin May 7.

Local 137 was asked to have its members vote on taking a 20-percent pay cut, but declined to vote on the issue.

Because the union declined, Jeff Gural, the private developer who took over the facility, says that racing will not be able to begin at the facility and simulcast wagering will be forced to come to a halt May 12.

Along with the suspension of racing, more than 600 workers at the facility will also be laid off on starting May 12.
