NORTH ARLINGTON - Queen of Peace High School in North Arlington has eight days to come up with $1 million, or it will be forced to close its doors.

The private Catholic high school opened in 1930, and now only has 285 students enrolled. In order to stay open, people are volunteering their time to raise funds.

Volunteers have so far raised more than $400,000. Kathy Kiszka retired from teaching math at Queen of Peace two years ago after working at the school for 38 years. She is volunteering her time to make fundraising calls.

"It breaks my heart to think that the current junior class will not be able to graduate with their class members as a class,” she says.

Rising senior and star football player Derick Suazo says that he has already cleaned out his locker in case he can’t come back for his senior year.

“I want to play football, so the school needs to stay open for my senior year so I can bring back a ring to Queen of Peace High School,” he says.

The school recently received its largest donation from alumnus Tom Klein. Klein committed $250,000 to the cause. But alumni board president Michael Carucci says that the school is still short of its goal.

“We have eight days to go before our deadline. Can we do it? I think we can,” he says.

Anyone wishing to make a donation can do so at the school’s website. Donations are tax deductible and refundable if they don't reach the goal.
