JERSEY CITY - A soldier from Jersey City has been identified as one of the nine Fort Hood service members killed during a training exercise last week.

Pvt. Tysheena James, of Jersey City, was among those killed while the group was attempting to cross a flooded creek during an exercise in Texas, according to The Department of Defense.

The group's light medium tactical vehicle flipped over in the flooded creek. Three soldiers survived the incident.

James, 21, joined the military in November of 2015 and was assigned to Fort Hood in April 2016. She received the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Medal, as well as the Army Service Ribbon.

James was set to be deployed to Korea next year. She attended Dickinson High School.

Army officials are investigating the incident, which came amid heavy rains and flooding in parts of Texas.

A spokesman from Fort Hood says the soldiers were not sent out in conditions that were too dangerous, but James' mother, Essie, disagrees. "Flash floods for three weeks," she says. "State of emergency called two days prior by the governor. They should not have been out there."

James' remains are in Dover, Delaware and will be flown back home this week.
