NEWARK - A rally was held outside Newark City Hall Tuesday to protest the proposed new state-appointed schools superintendent for Newark.

The New Jersey State Board of Education will vote Wednesday to approve Christopher Cerf as the superintendent. Cerf would replace former Superintendent Cami Anderson, who stepped down from her position last month. Anderson's tenure has been criticized by many Newark residents and even Newark Mayor Ras Baraka.

The rally was held by the Alliance for Newark Public Schools, a group made up of about 20 different organizations that want to end the state control of Newark schools. The group of students, teachers, parents and union members say the people of Newark should get to choose the new leadership instead of a state appointment.

Protest organizers say the president of the state education board did tell them education board that their opinions and issues will be taken into consideration during the vote.
