NEWARK - Prosecutors say a surveillance video played in court today shows a scorned Irvington police captain driving recklessly while chasing down her ex-boyfriend to confront him for breaking up with her.

A video played for the jury appears to show Monique Smith driving over a median while she chased her former boyfriend, Newark Councilman John James.

Prosecutors say that on the day that Smith was promoted to a captain in the Irvington Police Department, James broke up with her via email. Prosecutors say that this enraged her, causing her to chase after him in her car. It was an incident that ended in front of the home of former Newark Mayor Sharpe James, John James’ father.

Prosecutors say that Smith bumped into James’ car several times during the chase. A crash investigator testified Tuesday about damage to Smith’s car, allegedly from the assault.

Smith is facing several charges including harassment, criminal mischief and using her Honda as a weapon.

Smith has been suspended from the Irvington Police Department pending the outcome of the trial. Testimony is expected to wrap up this week.
