NEWARK - Authorities say a driver involved in a car crash in Newark last week died from a gunshot wound.

But Essex County prosecutors say it's still not clear when or why Dino Whitaker was shot.

The 32-year-old Irvington man was found trapped inside a vehicle that had struck two parked cars on Thursday afternoon. He was taken to a hospital, where he died a short time later.

Whitaker's death is now being investigated as a homicide. But prosecutors declined to release further details on Tuesday, citing the ongoing investigation.

No other injuries were reported in the crash.
