Prosecutor's office: Murder-suicide in Bridgewater jewelry store

BRIDGEWATER - As News 12 New Jersey first reported yesterday evening, authorities say two people are dead after an apparent robbery attempt ended as a murder-suicide at Roy T. Jewelers in Bridgewater.

Somerset County Prosecutor Geoffrey Soriano says Michael J. Koury shot and killed the owner of the jewelry store, Roy Devoe, and then turned the gun on himself.

Soriano says that Koury first shot himself in the jaw and then cut his throat with a stainless steel knife before shooting himself another time in the head. He also says that a suicide note was discovered in Koury's home.

The Somerset County Prosecutor's Office says the 19-year-old from Bridgewater Township entered the jewelry store in the Bridgewater Towne Center shopping center at around 4:45 p.m. yesterday.

Soriano says that Koury also threatened Devoe's daughter, Angela, and fired a shot at her as she ran out of the store.

News 12 New Jersey spoke to people last night who were shocked over the shootings and described the owners of the store as a lovely family.

Police have not found any connection between the Koury and the Devoe, but say the investigation is ongoing.
