NEW YORK - Opening statements were delivered Monday in the trial of a former Linden police officer accused in a fatal drunken wrong-way crash in Staten Island.

Assistant District Attorney Frank Prospero told jurors that it was former Linden officer Pedro Abad’s extreme intoxication that led him to slam into a truck while traveling the wrong way down the street at 73 mph.

Linden Officer Frank Viggiano and Linden resident Joseph Rodriguez were killed.  Another Linden police officer survived. He is expected to testify that Abad was driving.

Abad faces charges including aggravated vehicular homicide and manslaughter in connection with the March 2015 crash. He has pleaded not guilty.

Defense attorney Mario Gallucci says authorities didn't properly obtain a blood sample and can't prove that Abad was intoxicated.
