EAST RUTHERFORD - A plan to build a casino in northern New Jersey may be dead before residents get to vote on it.

A major ad campaign by the pro-casino group Our Turn NJ has been suspended. The commercials can still be viewed on the group’s website, but have been pulled from the air.

Although some residents tell News 12 New Jersey that they are in favor of having a casino built at the Meadowlands, a Rutgers Eagleton poll showed 58 percent of New Jersey residents opposed the plan while only 35 percent approved.

"The real disappointment is that we don't have as much of an opportunity to share with the voters of New Jersey any of the positive reasons that expanding gaming outside of Atlantic City can do for New Jersey and we're being overshadowed by a lot of outside-of-New Jersey money,” says Meadowlands Chamber of Commerce President Jim Kirkos.

Kirkos says that he hopes that the American Dream mega-mall project will help pave the way for a casino in Bergen County.

“We need to prove to voters we know what we're talking about,” he says.

The American Dream project is currently on hold after a group filed a lawsuit over the borrowing of government bonds.

If the referendum to expand gambling in New Jersey does not pass in November, lawmakers will have to wait two years before they can try again.
