Prisoner escapes in Garfield, shot and killed by police

GARFIELD - Police say a prisoner that had escaped from Garfield police custody was shot and killed this afternoon.

Officials say the incident happened around the area of Dahnert Park Lane.

Police say that the suspect escaped from Garfield police headquarters and was pursued to a garage where he was shot in a confrontation.

The suspect was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at around 6 p.m., according to officials.

Police have not released the identity of the man or why he was in police custody.
