Power shut off at East Orange apartment building

EAST ORANGE - Residents at the Prospect Towers apartment building on Prospect Street are outraged after power was cut to the entire building this morning, and PSEG says it's because the building's owners owe hundreds of thousands of dollars in electric bills.

The building's residents say the power was cut without warning, and want to know where the money they pay in maintenance fees is going if the building hasn't paid electric bills since last summer. A spokesperson for PSEG says the city and tenants were notified of the impending shutdown by posting notices in the building and parking lot, but tenants say they never saw any signs.

PSEG has since temporarily restored electricity, with power most likely staying on until Monday. If it's shut off again, the building will be declared a safety hazard and have to be evacuated.
