NEWARK - Utility crews have restored power to nearly all customers after Thursday’s equipment failure and fire in Newark.

PSE&G says service has been restored to all but one affected building.

PSE&G says a piece of equipment failed early Thursday morning in a manhole at University Place and Bleeker Street, causing a fire and power outages to several large customers.

The power outage affected several businesses, Rutgers Newark, NJIT and Saint Michael’s Medical Center.

St. Michael’s Medical Center lost power, but used generators to stay open.

PSEG will have the bad equipment sent out for testing to determine what caused the failure.

Drivers are urged to avoid the area.
