FREEHOLD - Monmouth County is dealing with some issues with absentee voters’ ballots.

The Monmouth County clerk tells News 12 New Jersey that a design flaw in the ballot envelopes caused dozens of mailed-in ballots to be returned to the sender. A machine at the post office read the return address window instead of the mailing address printed on the envelope.

County Clerk Christine Hanlon says voters can re-mail their ballots with no additional postage or call for a new envelope.

"In addition to that, we just set up a hotline for the voters to call so that if they're concerned about whether their ballot has come back to the Board of Elections, they can call the hotline and ask whether their ballot was received,” Hanlon says.

Hanlon says more than 7,000 absentee ballots have been received without a problem. She says the mail distribution center in Trenton has also changed its software to correct the issue.

Any Monmouth County resident who has a question about their absentee ballot can call 732-303-2900 for more information.
