The Port Authority police have arrested 48-year-old Robert Schmidt, of Staten Island, for allegedly transporting illegal fireworks.

ELIZABETH - The Port Authority police have arrested 48-year-old Robert Schmidt, of Staten Island, for allegedly transporting illegal fireworks.

Schmidt's van was pulled over in Elizabeth just after 4:30 pm on Tuesday.  He granted the police permission to search his rented cargo van.  Police say they found the 39 cases of fireworks in the vehicle.

The Elizabeth Fire Department and Union County Bomb Squad were notified and responded. The van was impounded.

Schmidt has been charged with possession of illegal fireworks and disorderly persons charges.
