HIGHLAND PARK - Highland Park police are investigating a car crash that killed a 6-year-old boy on Saturday afternoon.

The crash happened at the intersection of Route 27 and Columbia Street in Highland Park.

Witnesses say a mother, her young son and another child were walking along the sidewalk when a car hit a concrete-lined trash can, which then hit her son.

The victim's mother is listed in critical condition at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

The 21-year-old driver has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault.
