ELIZABETH - Police say a woman wielding two knives was shot by an officer responding to a domestic incident early Monday morning.

Patrol units responded to an apartment on Elm Street in Elizabeth just before 1 a.m. Monday to encounter the woman, who police say reacted aggressively to the presence of officers.

Investigators say the officers used pepper spray in an unsuccessful attempt to subdue the woman. They say officers then tried to maneuver an object into her path to prevent her from attacking them, but that an officer was forced to draw his firearm.

The officer fired a single round, striking the woman in the torso. She was rushed to University Hospital in Newark for emergency treatment. She is listed in stable condition.

The incident is under investigation by the Union County Prosecutor's Office Shooting Response Team. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Union County Prosecutor's Office Detective Edwin Maldonado at 908-527-4359
