Police: Wife tries to kill husband with chemicals, hot oil, ax

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP - Authorities say a Somerset woman accused of attacking her husband with hot oil, chemicals and an ax is in custody after surrendering.

Somerset County Prosecutor Geoffrey Soriano says the victim was sleeping in the couple's Franklin Township home when Mauvette Mattandeen sprayed an unknown chemical in his face on Friday morning. The prosecutor says while the man was washing the chemical off in the shower, his 41-year-old wife doused him with a pot of hot cooking oil.

The victim managed to flee to a neighbor and remains in intensive care for severe burns to his head, face and torso.
