WAYNE - Police are mulling charges for a Wayne dress shop owner after she allegedly made a false claim that 40 dresses were stolen from her boutique.
Wayne police tell News 12 New Jersey that they received several complaints from girls who had paid for prom dresses at Red Carpet Pageant & Prom, but were never able to pick their dresses up. Police say shortly after they contacted shop owner Patricia Dowling about the complaints, she reported a break-in at her store.
Police doubted her claim after viewing a surveillance video. According to a published report, security video from inside the boutique shows Dowling removing the gowns herself.
Local dress shops, including The Fig Leaf, are offering discounts to girls who are having trouble getting their dresses from Dowling.
