TOMS RIVER - Police say an underground water main break has prompted the closure of Main Street in downtown Toms River.

Southbound Main Street is being detoured onto Highland Parkway, and northbound Main Street is being diverted onto Legion Street.

Water service has been shut off on both sides of Main Street from Washington Street to Walton Street, authorities say. Water is also being shut off in other parts of the area, near Lien and Park streets.

Officials say crews with United Water Company are on the scene making repairs, and will likely be there until 9 p.m.
