OCEANPORT - Police departments in several New Jersey towns have been reporting a rash of thefts of packages from people’s porches. Many of these packages have contained Christmas gifts.
Barbara Chachko of Oceanport says that several packages were stolen from her porch Tuesday, out from under her decorative sled.
Oceanport police say the thieves typically follow delivery trucks and strike quickly before homeowners are able to get their items.

“They track. They pick. They fish. They don't know what they're getting most of the time, but they take a shot and take what they can,” says Oceanport Police Det. Sgt. Mike Fagliarone.
This year Cyber Monday sales broke records, so there will be a lot more packages being delivered this holiday season.
Police say packages should be shipped to places where they'll be personally received and held for pick up. Packages should also be tracked, and never left outside.
Other towns that have experienced package thefts include Cranford, Edison and Hoboken.
