Police use DNA on knife to catch sex attack suspect

A woman's flight-or-fight instinct to fight off her attacker helped police catch an alleged sexual predator from Matawan who is believed to have struck twice

MATAWAN - A woman's flight-or-fight instinct to fight off her attacker helped police catch an alleged sexual predator from Matawan who is believed to have struck twice this summer.

Police arrested Derrick Federick in connection with two sexual attacks of women. One attack happened at the Mark Hampton apartment complex in Matawan. The other happened at the Tree Haven complex in Aberdeen.

According to authorities, the female victim stabbed Federick in the chest during the Tree Haven attempted assault. Police say blood from the knife helped investigators link Federick to both crimes.

The two incidents happened three months apart.
