JERSEY CITY - A crash in Jersey City has left one teen dead early Saturday morning.
The crash occurred just after 4:30 a.m. on Route 440 in the area of County Road 602 and Danforth Avenue.
Emergency crews say the car slammed into a tree, stripping it of its bark, and immediately split in two. The teen is believed to have been the passenger in the car. The driver was responsive at the scene, but their condition is unknown.
Half of the car burst into flames, while the other half was scattered across the highway.
The road was shut down for hours as crews cleared the scene, but has since reopened.
Officials believe speed may have played a factor in the crash, but the exact cause is still under investigation.
Residents in the area say the stretch of road is known for drag races at night, despite a particularly tough bend.
