MORRISTOWN - The man believed to have hit his wife in the head with a gun near a hospital earlier today is now in custody after barricading himself inside his Livingston home.

Police say they tracked down 54-year-old Donald Ebert to a home on Wynnewood Avenue in Livingston at around noon. Not long before that, Ebert allegedly pistol-whipped his wife near the area of Morristown Memorial Hospital.

According to published reports, the pistol-whipping incident did not occur inside the hospital.

The hospital and two nearby schools were put in lockdown as police searched for Ebert. Once the area was deemed safe, the lockdown was lifted. The hospital is open and accepting patients, according to a spokesperson.

Neighbors have identified Ebert as an out-of-work contractor who has lived at the house for at least 10 years.

There was no activity around the home in the hours since the attack, according to police.
