Police: Suspect charged in murder of Maplewood man

MAPLEWOOD - Authorities say they have arrested and charged a suspect in connection with the murder of a Maplewood man back in March.

John Staten, 30, of Orange, is now under arrest and jailed on $1 million bond, according to authorites. He's charged with murder in the beating death of Arthur Downey.

Police say Downey met Staten in an Internet chat room before they met in person and went to Downey's Maplewood home.

Authorities say there's evidence that the killing was motivated by hatred.

A roommate discovered Downey's lifeless body on March 15. Police say the cause of death was blunt force trauma.
