NEWARK - A suspected carjacker remains in stable condition after he was shot by police in Newark as he was trying to flee following a pursuit this morning, according to police.

Police pursued the stolen Land Rover from Frelinghuysen Avenue and West Bigelow Street to a parking lot along Routes 1 & 9 southbound, where three men bailed out and got into an Audi.

As police tried to take the suspects into custody, one of the carjackers drove the Audi toward police, according to Detective Eugenio Gonzalez. One of the officers opened fire and struck the suspect, police say.

The injured suspect was taken into custody and transported to UMDNJ. No officers were injured in the incident.

The suspect has not yet been identified.
