PATERSON - Authorities are canvassing a Paterson neighborhood for information on the source of a bullet that struck a 12-year-old girl riding a scooter Saturday night.
Police believe the shooter was aiming at someone else when Genesis Rincon was struck in the head at around 8:30 p.m. Two other children who were with her weren't injured.
Family says Rincon had left a gathering to go to a nearby store with another girl and a boy, but the store was closed so they headed back to the event. They were taking turns riding the scooter and were about a block away from the gathering when multiple shots rang out.

A mobile command center has been set up at the corner of Rosa Parks Boulevard and Warren Street. Police are also trying to find any surveillance camera video and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
"I just want justice, that's it," says the victim's father, Alexis Rincon. "I'm born and raised in Paterson and whoever sees this knows me. Say something, that was my daughter, that was my first daughter."
Investigators believe the shooting may be connected to one that happened in the same area early Saturday. In that shooting, a 26-year-old man was wounded in the leg.
There is a $3,000 reward being offered for information leading to an arrest in the case.
Rincon has been declared dead, but is on life support so her organs can be donated. Doctors say her organs could save up to eight lives.
Residents hope police officers become a more common sight in their neighborhood. Over the next four years, newly elected Mayor Joey Torres say he'll put 100 more cops on the street and is pushing for curfews in select areas of the city.
