UNION TOWNSHIP - Police are still looking for the body of a woman who they say was killed in Union Township.
The Union County Prosecutor's Office believes 43-year-old Matthew Ballister killed 43-year-old April Wyckoff, of Cranford, in his Union Township home sometime on Tuesday evening. Prosecutors believe Ballister then drove around for hours in a light green 2005 Hummer H2 looking for a place to dump her body.
The search has led police to parts of Jersey City and Newark. Search crews were seen gathering this morning at Liberty State Park. Police have not yet said what led them to those areas.
Ballister's mother, Eleanor Schofield, is accused of interfering with the investigation by attempting to assist in an effort to conceal evidence of the crime.
Police say Ballister ditched the victim's car in Newark Tuesday night, leaving the engine running in the hope that it would be stolen.
A police source says officers responded to a domestic violence call involving the suspect and the victim at the home earlier this year, but the prosecutor's office would not comment.
Ballister is currently being held on $2 million bail.
Anyone with information about Wyckoff's death, or anyone who may have had contact with Ballister or Schofield anytime between Tuesday night and Wednesday night, is being urged to contact Union County Prosecutor's Office Detective Robert Henderson at 908-527-4126 or 908-347-2686.
