HAMPTON - Police and officials believe propane caused a home in Hampton to explode yesterday, killing a woman.

Investigators now believe a propane leak caused the explosion. A large propane tank sits in back of the home. Police say the explosion was ignited by an appliance inside the home.

The explosion on New Street took the life of 56-year-old Deborah "Jesse" Smith, who survived the initial blast, but died in the subsequent fire.

"She made a phone call to her friend Kyle, who dropped her off here, and said, 'Kyle, the house exploded and I'm trapped,'" says family friend Rob Tulley. "And within a matter of minutes, the house was gone."

The homeowner's son's wife, Rae Reid, dispelled rumors of what may have caused the explosion, saying there was no meth lab or drugs involved.
