NEWARK - A store owner shot and killed a man that was allegedly trying to rob him Monday afternoon.

Police say a man barged into Top Dollar, a cash-for-gold store on South Ninth Street at Central Avenue, at approximately 3:30 p.m. The man attempted to steal merchandise from the store, but was shot by the store clerk as he was running away, according to investigators.

Witnesses told police the owner shot once and struck the man who collapsed and died outside the store.

Police are trying to determine whether the owner shot the robber from inside the store or if he chased him down the street.

The names of the store owner and the robber have not been released.
