Police: Reports of Jersey City gunman 'unfounded'

A large police presence was reported in the downtown area this afternoon.

JERSEY CITY - Police in Jersey City say reports of someone with a gun that prompted a large law enforcement response were "unfounded."

Police officers, SWAT, and K-9 units swarmed the normally quiet neighborhood in the area of Erie and 10th streets Wednesday afternoon.

Dozens of officers from Jersey City, Port Authority and ATF surrounded the Lincoln building in the Hamilton Park area, but it turned out to be a hoax.

Jiggar Doshi lives in the building at the center of the scare. With his two little girls in the apartment, he looked out his fifth-floor window and saw the activity outside. "It was scary - really scary," he says.

The area is not far from the Holland Tunnel entrance. Streets were closed, and buildings briefly locked down.

Jersey City police say Garfield police received a 911 call from someone claiming to be a teen who allegedly shot her mother and was in the Lincoln building with a gun. The call turned out to be a fake and not made from the building.

Most residents were pleased with the police response, especially given the fatal shooting of Officer Melvin Santiago. It was in another part of town, but is still on the minds of many across Jersey City.
