Police: Pedestrian fatally struck in Newark

NEWARK - A dangerous crossing turned deadly in Newark when a pedestrian was struck on a busy road. Police say the accident happened near the intersection of McCarter Highway and 4th Avenue just after 7 p.m. tonight. E-Z Wash Laundromat owner Tommy Helou says he heard a thump and ran outside to investigate, finding the driver of a red SUV looking shaken and another man lying on the road. Helou says too many pedestrians have been killed trying to cross McCarter Highway. He says officials should put a median in the middle of the road to force pedestrians to cross at the light. A team with the Essex County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the fatal collision.
