NEWARK - Newark police say that one man is in custody and another is on the loose after pulling off a pair of carjackings in broad daylight.
Simon Quattlebaum says Jahlil Thomas and another man approached his car this afternoon in Newark. He says Thomas and the accomplice pointed a gun at him and took off in his Lincoln Continental, which police say the suspects ditched a few blocks away.
Investigators say the two suspects struck minutes later on South 19th Street, where they again leveled a shotgun, this time at a woman before making off with her Dodge Durango.
Newark police say they chased the suspects to the corner of Muhammad Ali Avenue and Irvine Turner Boulevard, where they crashed into a car.
Newark Police Director Gary McCarthy says Thomas was in possession of the shotgun when he was tackled by officers from the new multi-agency carjacking task force.
Police say they arrested six more carjacking suspects today, bringing the total number of captured suspects to 18 since the formation of a task force last month.
