NEWARK - Newark police say they now know of at least 40 people who have gotten sick in the last 24 hours after they apparently ingested the synthetic form of marijuana known as K2.

Newark police officers initially responded Thursday night to a report of a sick person foaming at the mouth in the city. When they arrived at the scene, they say they found about 12 people experiencing similar symptoms.

All the people were taken to area hospitals and are expected to recover.

Police say they're investigating the source and working to identify the distributor of the synthetic marijuana.

The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
