LAKEWOOD - The one-year anniversary of the murder of Lakewood Police Officer Christopher Matlosz will be marked this Saturday.
As this painful anniversary for law enforcement approaches, some of the men and women in blue closest to Matlosz spoke out to News 12 New Jersey's Karla Bardiñas about how his death has affected them.
Officers say the murder of one of their own in the line-of-duty added tensions on the streets of Lakewood, and had them looking over their shoulder more than ever. Officer Kelly Zrebiec, with the Lakewood Police Department, says they were all afraid of what would happen next during patrols.
Another officer from Tinton Falls, who was a close friend of Matlosz, says it gave him a greater understanding of the importance of continued training. He says he's also made an effort since then to spend more time with his family and loved ones, because he says, "You never know."
