PATERSON - An off-duty deputy sheriff was one of two people who were shot outside a combination bar and liquor store in Paterson.
The shooting occurred outside El Eden Bar and Liquors on Straight Street. Police say two people were shot outside the establishment at 1:30 a.m. on Sunday.
One of the victims is Deputy Sheriff Oneil Peart, of Essex County, who was wounded in the torso. The other is a 22-year-old-man, who was shot in the neck. Both are listed in stable condition at St. Joseph's Medical Center.

Peart was reportedly off-duty at the time of the shooting.
Neighbors of the establishment told News 12 New Jersey that Peart either worked at El Eden Bar and Liquors or worked with the management team that owned the combination bar and liquor store, but they were not aware of the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Neighbors say the establishment often stays open until 3 a.m.
In a statement, Paterson police said that Peart was armed at the time but "was not able to return fire due to the extent of his injuries."
"It should be noted that officer Peart is a victim of a horrific crime, and he is not under investigation in this matter,” Capt. Heriberto Rodriguez said.
Police have not yet announced any arrests.
