NEWARK - A Newark police detective has been suspended from the force for allegedly failing to turn in reports that documented an interaction between officers and a 14-year-old Newark boy.

A spokesperson for the Newark Police Department says that Detective Wilberto Ruiz was suspended and other members of the Gang Enforcement Unit will be reassigned while an investigation takes place regarding the incident.

According to police, the 14-year-old and his mother say that he was roughed up during an encounter with the officers. The incident was apparently caught on surveillance camera. The incident involved Newark police officers and one officer from the Essex County Sheriff’s Department.

Detective Ruiz was suspended because he did not document the encounter or what happened during it until about 24 hours after the incident.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office was notified and is handling the investigation.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office at 862-520-3700.
