Police: N. Plainfield explosion injures 1 man

NORTH PLAINFIELD - Police say an elderly man was flown by helicopter to St. Barnabas Medical Center after suffering severe burns during an explosion in a North Plainfield apartment complex. The explosion occurred at the Cypress Garden Apartments , located at 1165 Route 22. Police say the man suffered burns to his arms, chest and possibly his face. Authorities say he was adjusting his thermostat when the explosion occurred and blew out the windows of his apartment.

A small fire ignited, but was quickly extinguished. The building suffered no significant structural damage. PSEG is at the scene investigating if the explosion was due to a gas leak.

The explosion appears to be accidental, but is under investigation.
