Police: Man who killed kids, himself was separating from wife

Authorities say the Pompton Lakes man who shot and killed his two young children with a rifle, then took his own life, was going through

RINGWOOD - Authorities say the Pompton Lakes man who shot and killed his two young children with a rifle, then took his own life, was going through a separation from his wife.

Police say Kurtis Birth, 38, shot and killed his 5-year-old daughter, Jada, and 3-year-old son, Jordan, on Monday night at his parents' former home at 21 Skyview Road in Ringwood.

Birth and his wife, Zoey Mendoza-Birth, were going through a separation, according to police. Authorities say the couple had no history of domestic violence.

Police responded to the Ringwood home after receiving a report from Pompton Lakes police that the father had taken the children from a day care and was headed to a relative's home. Police discovered the children's bodies inside and the father's body in his car.

The Morris County prosecutor said Kurtis also made an unsuccessful suicide attempt last month.
