HACKENSACK - The man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend and 4-year-old son in Jersey City has been shot by police in Hackensack and taken into custody.

Jose Ronald Santos-Alvarez is accused of killing Monika Potoczniak and their son Christopher Potoczniak Oct. 4.

After their bodies were discovered, a warrant was issued for Santos-Alverez’s arrest, and police began searching for him.

According to Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli, Hackensack police officers and detectives from the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office were investigating a tip that Santos-Alvarez was hiding out in an apartment located at 170 Clay St.

About 21 law enforcement officers converged on the building and split up to look for the suspect. When officers attempted to question two women inside one of the apartments, they realized Santos-Alvarez was inside in the back.

Officers attempted to arrest Santos-Alvarez and a struggle ensued. Santos-Alvarez allegedly pulled a 8- to 9-inch knife on officers and was shot in the abdomen by an officer.

He was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center is and is being treated for injuries that are not considered life-threatening. He now faces charges related to the murder.

The two women inside the apartment were also arrested and are expected to be charged with hindering because they allegedly lied to officers about Santos-Alvarez being inside.
