NEWARK - Authorities are conducting an investigation in Newark after an Essex County sheriff's officer shot a man while attempting to arrest him.

The 14-year veteran, attached to the U.S. Marshal Service, was executing an arrest warrant for a controlled dangerous substance when he entered a third-floor apartment in the 700 block of Highland Avenue, according to a news release from the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.

Geraldo Concepcion, 19, who was in the apartment with his girlfriend, was shot in the leg by the officer, the release said.

Emergency crews transported Concepcion to University Hospital in Newark. The officer was taken to Clara Mass for observation.

Authorities have not released the name of the officer.
