CARTERET - A Carteret man allegedly involved in a standoff with police for several hours Wednesday night had outstanding warrants, according to officials.

The incident began at 33 John St. just before 8 p.m. Wednesday. Carteret police say that they were called to the home after reports of a disturbance.

A neighbor tells News 12 New Jersey that the disturbance was over a barking dog.

“The guy came back downstairs and said, ‘I'm going to shoot this dog if it keeps barking.’ And the man downstairs said, ‘Well, I'm going to shoot you.’ And after that, 911 was called,” Jamaal Merritt said.

Carteret police say that when officers arrived at the home, they asked the man to put his dog in the house so that they could speak with him. But police say that the man went into the home and then locked the doors and windows and refused to come back out. He apparently told officers that they needed a warrant to come inside.

Authorities say that the officers found out that the man had several warrants in Linden and Carteret. Officers blocked off the area around the home as a precaution.

The man eventually agreed to come out and was taken to the hospital. Police say that the man had “health problems” and wanted to be checked by a doctor.

Carteret police also say that contrary to rumors posted on social media, no gunshots were fired during the incident and there were no hostages involved.

The name of the man involved in the standoff was not immediately released.
