LITTLE FALLS - A young man has been charged with murder after an 18-year-old was stabbed to death early Monday morning.

Jonathan Lafontaine, 20, faces charges of first-degree murder and two weapons charges in the death of Brian Topoleski, 18. Topoleski was a recent graduate of Cedar Grove High School.

Police say the victim and the suspect were each with friends in separate cars. The Jeep Lafontaine was traveling in pulled up next to a Mercedes Topoleski was riding in.

When the suspect and his friends drove off, the victim allegedly followed. The situation escalated at a house in Little Falls.

Neighbors say the group was in the street, exchanging words. Police say Lafontaine then went into the house, grabbed two kitchen knives, and came back out.

Investigators say Lafontaine punched Topoleski, then allegedly stabbed him multiple times in the chest.

Lafontaine hid in the backyard while his friends barricaded themselves inside the home. Nearby homes were briefly evacuated as police brought the incident under control.

Neighbors tell News 12 New Jersey that they saw emergency medical crews trying to resuscitate a man outside the home before he was loaded into an ambulance and taken away.

After a negotiation, the situation ended and police arrested Lafontaine.

Police say the suspect also injured the teen who lived in the home, who was trying to stop Lafontaine from grabbing the kitchen knives.
