NEWARK - Newark police and the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Squad say they are investigating an early morning shooting that left one man dead in the city's South Ward.

Authorities say they responded to reports of a shooting at the Church Terrace Apartments around 6:30 a.m.

When police arrived, they found a man with a single gun shot wound to the head in the hallway of 103 Church St. Police say the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities did not release the name of the victim.

Police ask anyone with information to call the Newark Police Department's 24-hour "Crime Stoppers" anonymous tip line at 877 NWK-TIPS (877 695-8477) or NWK-GUNS (877 695-4867).
