NEW MILFORD - Police in New Milford are looking for a suspect who apparently pretended to be a police officer and pulled over a driver.

The victim told police he was pulled over by the fake officer on River Road around 8:45 p.m. Feb. 4. The suspect was driving a 2000-2006 black Chevy Tahoe or Suburban with an interior mounted blue and red light.

The victim says the suspect told him that he had unpaid summonses and that they could be paid directly to him at the scene. Police say the victim declined to pay and the suspect drove off.

The suspect is described as a white man in his mid- to late-20s. He was about 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighed about 200 pounds, and had short salt and pepper hair and facial stubble.  Police say he was also wearing a blue police-style shirt with an American flag patch. He did not appear to have a gun.

New Milford Detective Brian Carlino says that real police officer will never take money from people off the street. He says they will  be wearing a name tag and badge with a number.

Anyone who might recognize the suspect is asked to call New Milford police at 201-261-1400. A reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest.
