CLIFTON - Police say they received a call about a hostage situation in Clifton Saturday night, but it turned out to be a hoax.

A caller falsely reported the hostage situation at the Digital Press video game store on Route 46, authorities say.

Police from multiple departments responded and shut down the busy road, backing up traffic for several hours.

Several people inside the store were handcuffed while investigators sorted out the situation.

This kind of hoax is called "swatting," police say.
