EAST ORANGE - The City of East Orange is reportedly laying off a number of police and firefighters to help close budget gaps.

Eighteen firefighters were reportedly laid off along with four captains being demoted.

Thirty-eight police officers were also reportedly laid off yesterday.

Firefighter Rick Carter said that he fears the reduction of personnel will expose residents to more danger with less people to save them in emergencies.

While there has been no official word from the city about the layoffs, firefighters are planning a protest rally on Tuesday.
