Police: Fake cop robs unsuspecting driver in Newark

NEWARK - Officials say a person impersonating a police officer pulled over and robbed an unsuspecting driver today in Newark.

The robbery happened at West Runyon Street and Ridgewood Avenue.

News 12 New Jersey has learned that the man flashed a fake badge, but was unaware that a security camera from the Northern Star Transportation bus company captured the robbery.

Robert Johnson, an employee at the company, says Newark police reviewed the security video.

Police Director Samuel DeMaio says this kind of crime puts people in jeopardy because it makes them question the integrity of real police officers.

Major Crimes and Internal Affairs are both investigating the incident and are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at (877) 695-8477.
