Police: Escaped prisoner in Garfield had armed himself during chase

GARFIELD - Officials say the prisoner who escaped from the Garfield police station had armed himself during the manhunt for him before he was shot and killed by police.

The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office says that the man, identified as 19-year-old Malik Williams, had turned himself in on a domestic violence charge but during processing, escaped and led officers on a manhunt leading to a home's garage.

Officials say it was there where Williams armed himself with tools, presumably from the same garage.

Two officers then opened fire on Williams, striking him several times, according to police.

Williams died a short time later.

Officials say the escape and shooting remain under investigation.
