ELIZABETH - Police say an Elizabeth detective shot a 42-year-old man earlier today after being attacked.

Authorities were at Metalico Recycling on York Avenue at around 1 p.m. following up on an investigation into stolen truck batteries.

When police tried to confront Erick Gwaldis of Linden about the stolen batteries, he allegedly took off and hit the detective.

The officer fired two shots, both of which struck Gwaldis.

Police say Gwaldis was trying to sell stolen items to Metalico when they approached him.

Gwaldis is currently in the hospital in serious condition.
